“Gangwon-do - The Center of the World”
“Gangwon-do - The Center of the World” is the top goal of the 4th popularly elected provincial government, and a vision of a 21st century Gangwon-do. It is our desire to make Gangwon-do not only a center for values, roles, and expectations both nationally and globally, but also a place where one can lead an economically and emotionally affluent life.
Background of “Gangwon-do - The Center of the World”
Although it is geographically located in the middle of the Korean Peninsular, Gangwon-do has historically been perceived as the border of the territory, “the place in the distance” or “the end of a dark alley.”Since Gangwon-do was treated indistinctly and incongruously by the government during the land development program in the 1960s - 1970s, the regulations and restrictions on the military installations and environment cut the growth potential of Gangwon-do.
With a change in the paradigm that values a quality environment and life, a revolutionary expansion of the traffic network, the progress in the relations between North and South Korea, Northeast Asian economies on the rise, and an active economic movement of the East Sea Rim in the 21st century, Gangwon-do has entered a breakthrough for new development that will greatly increase its key functions and roles.
“Gangwon-do - The Center of the World” has been set as the top goal for the Gangwon provincial government in order to cast off the stigma of local alienation and of being behind the times, and transplant a “Can-do” self-confidence into the province.
This goal has been in the works since the 3rd popularly elected provincial government was launched in 2002, followed by the launch of the 4th popularly elected provincial government in 2006
Implementation of “Gangwon-do - The Center of the World”
Gangwon-do maximizes all aspects of competencies to achieve the following goals for the “New-Start Gangwon: The Realization of the Advanced Class in the Economy and the Quality of Life” in the 4th popularly elected provincial government, so as to ultimately implement the top goal, “Gangwon-do - The Center of the World”- A capital city for the life and health industry based on advanced knowledge, environmentally friendly agriculture, and green tourism;
- A logistic center for Northeast Asia, inland, and on the east coast of the Korean Peninsula;
- A tourist hub for East Asia leading the globalization of the Korean tourist industry;
- A tourist hub for East Asia leading the globalization of the Korean tourist industry;
- A place where clean environments are well preserved, including Korea's number one spot for clear water and other ecological
resources; and - A stronghold for inter-Korean cooperation and unification.
