King Danjong Ancestral Ritual offered every year at Jang Royal Tomb which is one of the World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO was designated as an Intangible Cultural Asset for the first time among the ancestral rituals conducted at 40 royal tombs. Intangible Cultural Asset Subcommittee of the Cultural Asset Committee of Gangwon Province decided last April 15 (Friday) to designate King Danjong Ancestral Ritual  of Youngwol as such for it is worthy of preservation and transmission as a Confucian ritual formality offered at the tomb of King Danjong, 6th King of Chosun Dynasty called Jang Royal Tomb as well as the Loyal Subject Ancestral Rites at the altar which started in 1791 (15th year of King Jungjo) is the only one among the king's tombs of Chosun dynasty having high value of cultural assets.

 

King Danjong Ancestral Ritual of Youngwol designated as a provincial intangible cultural asset is known to have begun to comfort sorrowful soul of King Danjong in 1516 (11th year of King Jungjong) by dispatching chief royal secretary Shin Sang and since then the ceremony was held as a national ancestral ritual with continuous interests and support of Chosun royal families. The ancestral ritual was established in 1698 (24th year of King Sukjong) on the occasion that the ancestral tablet was decided to be Danjong and title of the tomb to be Jang Royal Tomb and when King Jungjo began to hold Loyal Subject Ancestral Rites at the altar in 1791 (15th year of King Jungjo), it was differentiated from other ancestral rituals offered at 40 royal tombs of Chosun Dynasty and the ceremony was not revoked even at the end of Chosun Dynasty and during Japanese ruling. The ancestral ritual has now been offered by the citizens of Youngwol County from 1st King Danjong Festival since 1967.

 

As King Danjong Ancestral Ritual of Youngwol was designated as an intangible cultural asset, intangible cultural assets of Gangwon Province became 19 in all and they are: Jungsun Arirang, the first of its kind designated in 1971, Samchuck Kee Tug-of-War (#2), Hoengsung Hoedaji Sound(#4), Gangreung Mt. Hak O-dok-taegi(#5), Traditional Porcelain Potter (#6), Yanggu Dolsanryung A-Frame Backpack Play (#7), Chulwon Sangnori Boundary Compacting Play (#9), Gangreung Sachun Hapyung Bridge Treading Play(#10), Chiljung-jaejang(#11), Lacquering (#12), Lacquerware inlaid with mother-0f-pearl (#13), Bangjja Bronze Spoon Making(#14), Pyeongchang Dunjunpyeong Traditional Farmers Music (#15), Gakja Wardrobe (#16), Fresh Lacquering Wardrobe (#17), Wonju Maeji Traditional Farmers Music (#18), Pyeongchang Mt. Hwangbyung Hunting (#19), Sokcho Domun Farmer's Song (#20) and Master Carpenter (#21).

 

Gangwon Provincial government will promote the program of imposing values upon intangible cultural heritage continuously by shedding new lights on the tradition and identity of the province to explore new cultural assets.
